Shirley was the beloved wife of the late Daniel J. Ahern, Jr., sister of Helen Borden, mother of Katherine Ahern, Daniel Ahern, Elizabeth Sleininger and Suzanne Gee. Shirley also leaves son-in-law Robert Gee and daughter-in-law Bronwen Ahern. Shirley’s wonderful grandchildren Danielle and her husband Michael Barry, David, Michael, Heather, Elizabeth and Ruby remain as a testament to her trust in Love. Shirley also leaves her sisters-in-law Florence Fahey and Dorothy Snyder, many loving nieces, nephews and friends as well as her Tibetan Holy Dogs Isabelle and Belle.
Shirley grew up in West Roxbury, attended Girl’s English Latin School, graduated from Radcliffe College in 1948 and earned masters degrees in library science and education. Her first job was with the U.S. Cartography Office in Washington, D.C. Shirley started her career as a librarian in the Boston Public Library Research Department and was, for many years, a fantastic school librarian. She retired from the Acton/Boxborough public schools in 1989.
Shirley was deeply loved and led a charmed life. She left us the gift of knowing Love knows no distance, no boundaries and no time. Shirley will be honored at a memorial service held on Monday, August 12 at 11 AM at the Newton Cemetery Chapel at 791 Walnut Street, Newton Centre, MA 02459 / 617-332-0047
