James Early Gately of Marblehead, MA and Naples, FL passed away on April 5, 2022. Jim was born in Wellesley, MA on August 19, 1932, to Edna Early Gately and John Sullivan Gately who both preceded him in death, as did his brother John (Jack) Early Gately and his sister Sarah (Sally) Gately Burland.
After graduating Wellesley High School, Jim received the town scholarship and took a postgraduate year at Worcester Academy, playing tight end for the Rams. He graduated from Babson College in 1954 where his love of business grew. Jim then enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving two fulfilling years in Germany teaching while earning a Korean War Service Medal.
After returning to the Boston area, he became a well-known businessman. Jim was highly regarded for his work ethic, understanding of mutual funds, ability to develop talent, and a keen eye for color and design. He loved his work and the team of salespeople he led – he was a proud printer.
Jim spent a successful 50+ year career at Daniels Printing Company, becoming a partner and President of Financial Printing in 1977. Later in his career, he established Daniels New York City office before the company was sold to Merrill Corporation in 1999. Jim was an extraordinary provider for his family.
In addition to football, Jim enjoyed various hobbies throughout his life including track, skiing, tennis, gardening, newspaper clipping, the stock market, and summering either on P Street in Nantasket or in Cape Cod with his family and friends.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 55+ years Mary Cook Gately and their three children Elizabeth Sanmarco (husband Mark) of Duxbury, MA, Alison Frost (husband Thomas) of San Marcos, CA, and Andrew Gately (wife Janny) of Washington, DC and seven grandchildren Lindsey, Thomas Jr. and Luke Frost, Noelle and Bridget Sanmarco, and Alexis and Bruce Gately.
Jim’s devotion to his Catholic faith and his family was his compass. His eyes sparkled recounting his love for Mary, his life stories, and his pride in his children and grandchildren; this will be Jim’s greatest legacy.
The Gately family welcomes family and friends to attend his wake on Monday, April 11th at 10am at Henry J. Burke & Sons Funeral Home 56 Washington Street Wellesley Hills, MA 02481, followed by his funeral Mass at noon St. John the Evangelist Church 9 Glen Road Wellesley, Massachusetts 02481.
