Obituary for Doris Edna Lacey (Perry)
Doris Edna Lacey (Perry), age 93, a resident of West Newton for the past 7 decades, died Sunday, March 21, at Newton Wellesley Hospital, following a short illness. She was predeceased by her husband Robert Lacey in 1993.
Doris was born in Watertown, Massachusetts on September 5, 1927, the youngest of three daughters of the late Joseph Albert “Al” Perry, originally from Prince Edward Island and Ethel Ruth Perry (Dobson) originally from Halifax Nova Scotia. She was raised in Watertown and moved to Newton upon her marriage. She and her husband built a house in West Newton where she remained until the last two months of her life.
She worked in clerical positions until her marriage, and once her children were of school age, she began working in various capacities in the Newton Public Schools, finishing her career as a Secretary in the Psychology and Social Services Department for nearly 30 years. After retirement she was for a time Secretary of the Newton Retired Employees Association.
In her younger years Doris enjoyed many hobbies including gardening and various crafts. She had many dear, lifelong friends.
She was a faithful member of the Lincoln Park Baptist Church for most of her married life, serving on the executive committee and participating in the Women’s Group, originally called Young Women and later Philathea. In the early years of her married life, she and her husband Bob led a young people’s group and many of them have reflected on the positive influence they had upon the young persons.
She is survived by her daughter Cynthia “Cindy” Lacey of Port Charlotte, Florida and her son Scott Lacey of Newton, Massachusetts, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her two sisters, Kathleen Quieros (Perry) of California and Ruth Valente (Perry) of Wayland, formerly of Newton.
