Obituary for David McAvinn

David F. McAvinn, a longtime resident of Newton, passed away Friday, December 4, 2020 at the age of 91. Son of the late Thomas W. and Geraldine (O’Brien) McAvinn, David was raised in Melrose and graduated Boston College, class of 1951. A proud veteran of the US Army, he served as Army Intelligence specializing in languages during the Korean War. David worked for the Foxboro Company for over 25 years, and then the next 25 years for New York Life. A devout Catholic, David was an active member of Sacred Heart Parish in Newton Centre.

He was the beloved husband of nearly 50 years to Judith P. (White) who predeceased him in February of 2008. He is the loving father of Amy E. Killion and her husband Curt of Westford, Peter J. McAvinn and his wife Ann of Wellesley, Stephen P. McAvinn of Boston, Edward T. McAvinn and his wife Carolyn of Braintree, John W. McAvinn of Newton and the late David F. McAvinn Jr. Also survived by his cherished grandchildren: Patrick and Kate Killion, Christopher, Paige and Jilly McAvinn, Jane and Michael McAvinn, and step-grandchildren Michael, Colin, Brian and Bridget Delduchetto, as well as his sister Mary Jo O’Brien her husband Richard and sister-in-law Patricia McAvinn, wife of the late John McAvinn.
