Obituary for Joan Luthy

Joan M. Luthy was born in Newton on February 10th,1930 to Gordon McCaskill McMullin and Alice Sigismond (McCarron) McMullin. She passed away on March 1 st , 2019, and leaves her children, Karen Mattingly and her husband Ron, of Lakeville, Minnesota, M Peter Luthy III, of Lake Forest, Illinois, Merideth Bruce and her husband David of Libertyville, Illinois, Sarah Ross and her husband Bill, of Glencoe, Illinois. She was predeceased by her infant daughter Mary Stuart Luthy.  She leaves her brothers, C. Gordon McMullin of Newton and Gregg E. McMullin of Sandwich.  She also leaves five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
While working as a laboratory technologist in the medical research field, Joan studied inorganic and organic chemistry, zoology, endocrinology, botany, and logic at the Harvard University Extension School 1968-1972. Later, she attended Boston University, graduating cum laude with a degree in Journalism 1982. She was the Administrator of the Stone Institute in Newton Upper Falls for many years. She was a talented writer and penned a number of articles for the Boston Globe and other periodicals. A tireless genealogist, she revealed family history for her family and others. This led her to Scotland, where she researched and wrote. She was active on a number of boards.
Joan spent her final few years as a patient at Stone where she received wonderful care from all the people there. Her niece, Betty Mazzone was a regular visitor, and all-around angel, who kept Joan joyful and engaged during her years at Stone and has been a great comfort to her family.
Joan was much loved and is greatly missed.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, May 25th at 10AM in the Chapel at Newton Cemetery, 791 Walnut St. Newton, MA followed by interment in Newton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Joan's memory may be made to Stone Rehab and Senior Living, 277 Elliot St. Newton, MA 02464.
