Obituary

Joan M. Luthy was born in Newton on February 10th,1930 to Gordon McCaskill McMullin and Alice Sigismond (McCarron) McMullin. She passed away on March 1 st , 2019, and leaves her children, Karen Mattingly and her husband Ron, of Lakeville, Minnesota, M Peter Luthy III, of Lake Forest, Illinois, Merideth Bruce and her husband David of Libertyville, Illinois, Sarah Ross and her husband Bill, of Glencoe, Illinois. She was predeceased by her infant daughter Mary Stuart Luthy.  She leaves her brothers, C. Gordon McMullin of Newton and Gregg E. McMullin of Sandwich.  She also leaves five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
While working as a laboratory technologist in the medical research field, Joan studied inorganic and organic chemistry, zoology, endocrinology, botany, and logic at the Harvard University Extension School 1968-1972. Later, she attended Boston University, graduating cum laude with a degree in Journalism 1982. She was the Administrator of the Stone Institute in Newton Upper Falls for many years. She was a talented writer and penned a number of articles for the Boston Globe and other periodicals. A tireless genealogist, she revealed family history for her family and others. This led her to Scotland, where she researched and wrote. She was active on a number of boards.
Joan spent her final few years as a patient at Stone where she received wonderful care from all the people there. Her niece, Betty Mazzone was a regular visitor, and all-around angel, who kept Joan joyful and engaged during her years at Stone and has been a great comfort to her family.
Joan was much loved and is greatly missed.

I just came across Joan's obituary and felt very sad that I had lost touch with her.
Joan was a dear friend to my mother, Elizabeth Welch, and a friend to our whole family. She gave moral support to me and my sisters after my mother died. I enjoyed our long conversations when she would talk about her many interests: friends, family, genealogy, Newton, her adventures, travels, days as a student, Stone Institute.. She had a curious mind and was always encouraging! What a good spirit she was!
The photo is of Joan being a good sport, wearing tartan and posing with a Scottish terrier.
