Obituary for Ruth F. White (Sikes)

Ruth F. White, 90, a lifelong resident of Newton, MA passed away on December 23, 2017. She was born in Auburndale on February 24, 1927, the daughter of Raymond Sikes and Gladys (Thompson) Sikes. Ruth graduated from Newton High School in 1944 and worked for the West Newton Savings Bank, eventually becoming the head teller.

Ruth married the love of her life, Edmond H. White Jr., on June 22, 1952 and they lived together in West Newton for 65 years. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this past June surrounded by family at their home on Cape Cod.

Ruth delivered meals on wheels in Newton from 1979 until 2005; she received the Unsung Hero Award recognizing her 25 years of service. Ruth was also a member of the Auburndale Garden Club and was president for several years. Her generous spirit and positive energy impacted so many.

Ruth and her late husband, Edmond, had a matchless bond that was hard to ignore. They were often spotted attending various Boston College sporting events, testing their luck at Foxwoods, enjoying time with friends at Woodland Golf Club and spending summer weekends at their cottage on Old Silver Beach.

She loved nothing more than being surrounded by her family. She remained close with her two sisters, Margie and Faith, throughout her life. Her children and grandchildren could always count on her love, support and gifted cooking skills.

Ruth is survived by her sister, Julia Faith Sikes Wilson, four children, Donald White of Boston, Cynthia Cuthbertson and her husband Bill of Rehoboth, Kenneth White and his wife Susan of Newton, and William White of Brighton; eight grandchildren, Thomas White and his wife Melanie, Caitlyn Cuthbertson, Sarah White, Kristen Cuthbertson, Peter White, Alison White, Kelly White, and Meghan White. Her beloved husband Edmond passed away on October 31, 2017.

Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, December 27, from 10:00-11:30am at Burke and Blackington Funeral home at 1479 Washington St. in West Newton. A celebration of life service will follow at 11:30am at the funeral home.
