Obituary for Edmond H. White Jr.

Edmond H. White Jr., 90, a lifelong resident of West Newton, MA passed away on October 31, 2017. He was born on January 3, 1927, the son of Edmond H. White Sr. and Agnes (Stewart) White. Ed graduated from Newton High School in 1945, enlisted in the Navy and served as a Medic until he was honorably discharged in July 1946. After his discharge, he enrolled in the School of Business at Boston College and graduated in 1951.
Ed married Ruth Sikes of Newton in 1952 and they celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary with family at their Cape Cod House this past June.
Ed joined the family construction business, Richard White & Sons, Inc. in West Newton, where he held several roles during his 60+ years including President, CEO, and Chairman of the Board. Ed oversaw the construction of many notable projects in the Boston area including The O’Neill Library, Conte Forum and Alumni Stadium at Boston College. He was actively involved in many construction-related associations including the Associated General Contractors of America and served a term as President of the Massachusetts’ Chapter. Ed also served as a longstanding member of the Board of Directors of the Village Bank of Newton.
An avid golfer, Ed was the longest standing member of Woodland Golf Club, becoming a member at age eighteen and continuing to play through this summer. He is a repeat member of the Hole-in-One Club at Woodland. When not on the golf course, Ed enjoyed his summer weekends on Cape Cod at the family cottage on Old Silver Beach in Falmouth. He was an enthusiastic sports fan who religiously followed his beloved Red Sox even through the 2017 playoffs. Ed was a lifelong supporter of Boston College athletics as a longtime season-ticket holder in football, basketball, and hockey.
Ed is survived by his wonderful wife of 65 years, Ruth (Sikes) White; his step sister Carolyn Kent of Salem, MA, four children, Donald White of Boston, Cynthia Cuthbertson and her husband Bill of Rehoboth, Kenneth White and his wife Susan of Newton, and William White of Brighton; eight grandchildren, Thomas White and his wife Melanie, Caitlyn Cuthbertson, Sarah White, Kristen Cuthbertson, Peter White, Alison White, Kelly White, and Meghan White.
Visiting Hours will be held at the Burke and Blackington Funeral Home at 1479 Washington St. in West Newton on Monday October 6, 2017 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM A Funeral Mass will be held at Corpus Christi – St. Bernard Church at 1529 Washington St. West Newton at 10:00 AM on Tuesday Nov 7, 2017, followed by a burial at Newton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Boston College Office of Athletic Development, Conte Forum # 320, Chestnut Hill, MA 02467 – donations must be made “in memory of” Edmond H.
