Obituary for Joanne Alice Flynn

FLYNN, Joanne Alice Experience, Service, Reflection 73, of Long Beach, CA began her last journey on December 22, 2017. Joanne was born on September 16, 1944 in Newton, Massachusetts. She is predeceased by her parents, Joseph John and Alice Colleran Flynn. She is survived by her sister, Susan E. Sundstrom and close friend Sister Marie Buonato. She also leaves behind numerous loving friends that showed so much caring during her final months.
Joanne was the happy recipient of a Sacred Heart education both at Newton County Day School of the Sacred Heart and Manhattanville College. She graduated from Newton College of Sacred Heart. For a number of years Joanne was a nun of the Religious of the Sacred Heart. She then transitioned to Southern California and glorious warm weather. There she held a management positions with various companies. Joanne was an excellent manager, capable of fulfilling deadlines with ease and being a "good boss".
Foreign travel was Joanne's passion. She was proud of having been to 83 countries and had hope to make a 100. She shared these trips with many dear friends but also was comfortable in adventuring in her own. Joanne's sister, Susan, was blessed to have shared in some of these explorations. There was never a city or museum that Joanne didn't love!
The other passion in Joanne's life was giving of her time and energy to others. The Ignatian Volunteer Corps was very special to Joanne. She devoted the last 6 years of her life to them. She was also an active member of the A.A.S.H. Los Angeles. She was president of her homeowner's association for many years. Our Lady of Refuge, Long Beach, was her home parish.
Joanne had a thirty year battle with cancer and would like to thank her oncologist, Dr. Fred Rosenfelt for keeping her alive so she could keep traveling the world. Joanne never let cancer define her.
A memorial service will take place at Long Beach, CA. the time to be decided at a later date.
Funeral services will be held at Newton Country Day School, Monday, January 8, 2018 AT 11am.
