Obituary for Charles E. Hodges

Charles E.  Hodges
Charles E. Hodges, of Newton, MA, formerly of Riverdale, NY, died at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital on September 7, 2017 surrounded by his family. Beloved son of Stella (Trojan) and Charles Hodges of Nanticoke, PA. Charlie is survived by his wife of 44 years, Kathleen Scully Hodges and by his cherished nieces and nephews, Sarah and Liam McRell, Sean, Brian and Kathleen Scully and Cara Scully Cronin and his grandnephews, Noah Smythe, Robert Scully and Jack Cronin. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Robert Scully and his wife Eileen, and William McRell. Charlie was pre-deceased by his brother-in-law John Scully and his sister-in-law Claire Scully McRell.

Charlie graduated from Marymount High School in Wilkes-Barre, PA and from Mount Saint Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, MD. He received a Master of Arts degree from John Carroll University in Cleveland and pursued doctoral studies at the University of Illinois at Champagne-Urbana. Charlie was a professor of English at Fordham University and also taught at City University of New York and LaGuardia Community College.
After moving to the Boston area, Charlie joined the faculty of Newton Country Day School of the Sacred Heart, where he taught public speaking and directed the drama program. He was a gifted teacher whose wit and intelligence endeared him to students and colleagues alike. He was a devout member of Our Lady Help of Christians parish, and an active chorister in the bass section of Newton Community Chorus. He will be greatly missed by his family and many life- long friends.

Family and friends are cordially invited to attend visiting hours at Newton Country Day School of the Sacred Heart, 785 Centre Street, Newton, MA on Sunday, September 10, 2017 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Bishop Dennis Sullivan and the Reverend James Burke at the chapel at Newton Country Day School on Monday, September 11, 2017 at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Scholarship Fund at Newton Country Day School www.newtoncountryday.org/onlinegiving or Mount Saint Mary’s University at http://msmary.edu/ .
